This study assessed the scope of the existing sustainable
development strategy (SDS) developed by the British Marine
Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) under the umbrella of the
parent SDS developed by the Mineral Products Association (MPA). The
BMAPA strategy is one of the most developed for the marine sector
and provides a good benchmark for other marine industries and
indeed for UK organisations as a whole, in assessing the
sustainability of activities in the marine environment.
Gaps in the strategy are identified, particularly in relation to
existing and developing legislation, and recommendations made for
further core values, indicators and targets. The assessment has
been made based on a review of sustainable development strategies
and criteria for indicators of change and relevant targets, and
methods for setting these. The review also considers what is
achievable at various governmental, sectoral and corporate levels
using monitoring data that is currently collected by individual
companies and may be collected in the future under developing
legislation such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive
(MSFD).
